What are online marketplaces for errands?

Online marketplaces for errands are marketplaces where people and businesses post small tasks and errands they want help with in return for a modest fee, typically between a few dollars and a hundred dollars.

Sample tasks and errands include grocery delivery, house chores, office help, handyman, moving help, virtual assistance, and photograph a restaurant menu.

Some online marketplaces also allow you to post ads for items you wish to buy or borrow from your local community.

Are all online marketplaces for errands scams?

I'm sure this is a question many people have asked themselves. I did a lot of research on this topic. And here's the conclusion I came to...

The good news is that online marketplaces for errands do provide legitimate ways to make some extra money online.

Low pay

Some people complain about the low pay, but it's up to you whether or not it's good enough for you.

Some people do errands and tasks while they're out and about, such as on the way to work or taking the kids to school. So it doesn't take much time out of their schedule.

Don't expect to replace your full-time income doing errands and tasks. Most people use them as a means to supplement their income or help pay bills in-between jobs.

Having said that some people do it full-time and earn almost $5,000 a month from it. You get out what you put in. Make it work for your situation.

Available to anyone

The great thing about online marketplaces for errands is that virtually anyone who can get out and about can run an errand or do a task such as take a photo.

Conclusions

Online marketplaces for errands do provide genuine opportunities to make some extra money. Think of online marketplaces for errands as part-time jobs that's there whenever you need them.

2 online marketplaces for errands

I'll share with you three online marketplaces for errands you should check out and a few others you may want to avoid for now.

These three online marketplaces are all backed by sizable teams of professionals, have millions in funding, signed up thousands of workers, and processed many thousands of jobs.

  1. TaskRabbit: a mobile and online marketplace connecting people who want to make money with local people and businesses who gladly pay for help with everyday errands and tasks.
Overall based on what I've seen and read, I like TaskRabbit a lot. Backed by a growing team of professionals and $24.7 million in funding, TaskRabbit offers a legitimate way to make money online.
  2. Gigwalk: differs from TaskRabbit and Zaarly in that it offers jobs such as photograph a restaurant menu or verify a street name. There are no 'pick up my dry cleaning' jobs.
Gigwalk's attracted job requests by major companies such as BMW, eBay and Microsoft. With $1.7 million in funding and fortune 500 clients, I think Gigwalk is certainly worth a look if you're an iPhone user looking to make some extra money.

Zaarly: In March 2013 Zaarly shut down its "request anything" marketplace. Instead, Zaarly will now allow users to set up storefronts for their local businesses.

Please note that I haven't tried any of these online marketplaces because they're not available where I live, Sydney, Australia. So make sure you're comfortable before accepting any work on these online errands marketplaces.

Other online errands marketplaces

I also found these online errands marketplaces but they don't appear to have the activity, support or backing enjoyed by TaskRabbit or Gigwalk.

So for now I'd suggest you stick to TaskRabbit, Zaarly and Gigwalk.

If any of them graduate to point where I feel they're ready for the wider audience, I'll do a write up of them here.

If you come across any other online marketplaces for errands similar to TaskRabbit, Zaarly or Gigwalk, either in the United States or other English speaking countries, please post a comment at the bottom of this page.
